Celiac Success Stories

Tell us about your symptoms before you were diagnosed with celiac disease?
When I was four years old I was diagnosed with anaemia which was surprising for my parents as I was such a healthy eater. After having this treated my health significantly improved and I had no real celiac symptoms till I was a teenager. I remember in high school I was always so tired and sometimes I would be struggling to stay awake in class even though I had a good sleep the night before. I always seemed to get getting sore throats and colds and my general health was pretty poor.

Every time I ate foods like pasta, pizza or bread my tummy would bloat out and I would feel so uncomfortable and get bad pains. After one slice of pizza I would feel so full that it felt like I had eaten a four course meal. I had no idea that this was not a normal way to feel so I didn’t really give it much thought.

It wasn't till 2006 when I moved to Melbourne that I became aware that I had a serious problem. Next to my work was a cafe that had the most amazing pasta salads, sandwiches and croissants and I went for about a year eating these types of foods on a daily basis. My symptoms became worse than ever and I was feeling so terrible and had no idea why. I was out for lunch one day with a group of work friends and heard one of them talking about how she had celiac disease. I was really interested and asked her lots of questions about it. I was amazed to find I had almost every single symptom she was describing. I did lots of research about celiac disease on the internet and became convinced that I had it.

My Father died ten years ago of a blood disorder called myloid dysplasia which turned to Leukaemia. All his life he suffered from a bad stomach and had very similar symptoms to me. I would be very interested to know if my dad also had celiac disease and whether his blood disorder was related in any way.

Tell us what has your life been like since being diagnosed with celiac disease?
Not long after I found out my friend had celiac disease I got tested. Sure enough my results came back positive for celiac disease and I was so relieved and excited at the prospect of feeling so much better. Since eliminating gluten from my diet I instantly started to feel better. I have been totally gluten free for about three months and am feeling absolutely fantastic. I have so much energy and I feel happier and healthier. I no longer experience bloating after meals and my stomach is flatter than it has ever been. All of my symptoms have dramatically improved which has made life so much more enjoyable.

Eliminating gluten was not easy at first as I craved many of the foods I wasn't allowed, but the result of feeling amazing outweighs eating those foods my far! I now hardly ever crave foods with gluten as I have discovered so many amazing alternatives.

Being diagnosed has been a life changing experience in a very positive way. I feel so much happier and healthier now which is reflected in every aspect of my life.
